WHO WE ARE?
Since 1905, students and teachers of the Druga gimnazija Sarajevo have been making special efforts to build and maintain the reputation of the best school in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since 2000, the Druga gimnazija Sarajevo has become a licensed school for the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) and thus became the first school in Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the IB organization. Five years later, in 2005, Druga gimnazija Sarajevo introduced the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP), and again became the first and to this day the only school in BiH that offers this program for students aged 14-16. By encouraging students to develop intellectually, emotionally and ethically as well as academically, Druga gimnazija Sarajevo with IB programmes differs from other education frameworks offered in Sarajevo.
School mission
Druga gimnazija Sarajevo teaches and encourages students to learn, nurture their talents and apply them to various challenges of today. It introduces young people to a rich world of friendship, tolerance and intercultural understanding, while guiding them to think critically, be just and socially responsible.
MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAME
Middle Years Program is one of four programes offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
The programe offers educational approach that embraces yet transcendent traditional school subject and serves as an excellent preparation for Diploma Program.
The IB MYP, like the other three programs of the IBO is based on the premise that education can foster understanding among young people around the world, enabling future generations to live more peacefully and productively than we do today.
The IB Middle Years Programme aims to develop in its students:
- The disposition and capacity to be lifelong learners.
- The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing reality.
- The capacity and self-confidence to act individually and collaboratively.
- The ability to engage in effective communication across frontiers.
- Respect for others and an appreciation of similarities and differences.
MYP CURRICULUM MODEL
The curriculum in the IB Middle Years Programme can be presented in the form of the model below from which it is clearly seen that the student is situated at the centre of the curriculum model. The student is surrounded by the main elements of the programme's philosophy (approaches to learning and teaching, concepts and global contexts) as well as eight subject groups. An important part of the curriculum model is the Personal project, a significant body of work which is done over an extended period of time, as well as Service and action, which includes the obligatory extracurricular activities.
IB LEARNER PROFILE
The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
TEACHING AND LEARNING IN CONTEXT
Teaching and learning in the MYP involves understanding concepts in context. All learning is contextual. Learning that occurs out of context is often shallow and short term in character.
There are six MYP global contexts:
APPROACHES TO LEARNING
Through approaches to learning (ATL) in IB programmes, students develop skills that have relevance across the curriculum that help them “learn how to learn”. They provide a solid foundation for learning independently and with others. IB programmes identify five ATL skill categories, expanded into developmentally appropriate skill clusters.
